Hyderabad emerges as the most liveable and affordable city

The Mercer Quality of Living report has named Hyderabad the best city in India for five consecutive years.

Several factors kept Hyderabad at the top of the global survey – investments in “economic and public infrastructure”, availability of consumables, medical supplies, and a large pool of human resources, including both domestic and international talent – owing firmly to its many favorable attributes.

Affordability factor

As a matter of fact, Hyderabad was ranked 192nd globally in Mercer’s 2022 Cost of Living Survey, behind Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru. It implied that the city was cheaper for everything from rent, transportation, food and clothing to household goods and entertainment.

For instance, accommodation in Hyderabad, is “over 50% lesser than those of Mumbai”, while the cost of other essentials such as “energy, phone, etc…the cost of home utilities” is also among the lowest. “Watching a movie in Mumbai is most expensive whereas Hyderabad is the cheapest,” the survey said.

The most dynamic city

Mercer’s findings were reaffirmed by two more surveys. As a destination discovery website, Holidify.com ranked the “city of contrasts” as one of the best places to live and work, saying it exudes an old-world charm with the Old City (Charminar side), Hi-Tech City (Cyberabad) and other areas lying between the old and the new, JLL’s City Momentum Index 2020 has chosen Hyderabad as the most dynamic city in the country.

There are several reasons for this, including rapid real estate growth, extensive air connectivity, and a significant presence of corporate headquarters. “While many markets struggled to bounce back post the pandemic, Hyderabad’s realty sector made a quick recovery. In fact, the metro saw a huge increase in residential properties over the last few years suggesting a healthy trend and growing demand,” said Sandip Patnaik, managing director, JLL adding how the inflow of corporates into the city has also been steady.

With the recent rains exposing Bengaluru’s lack of infrastructure, he believes that more roads will be leading to the Telangana capital in the near future.
