Hyderabad: GHMC undertakes a variety of measures to help the needy

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is undertaking a variety of measures to help women in economically weaker sections, as well as street vendors, the specially-abled, senior citizens, unemployed youth, and the homeless.

In addition to setting up shelter homes for the homeless, which would be particularly helpful during this winter, the civic body established similar shelters at government hospitals for families/attendants of patients who were admitted there.

In this financial year (until October), 816 new self-help groups (SHGs) were formed for women, while 1,62,800 identity cards were distributed to street vendors and 763 to senior citizens under Aasara. As part of the Vikasam initiative (Welfare of Persons with Disabilities – PWDs), 100 identity cards have already been issued to the specially-abled.

For persons who were issued these identity cards after due process, the GHMC facilitated the SHGs to get financial assistance through banks at a lesser interest rate, and for street vendors, a loan amount was disbursed under PM Street Vendors’ Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi).

A total of Rs 232.53 crore was linked to 3,278 SHGs and Rs 62.96 crore was disbursed to 55,619 street vendors during this financial year.

During the assessment camps, selected aids and appliances, as well as artificial limbs, were distributed to specially-abled and senior citizens. The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) provided equipment for the eligible beneficiaries.

On a pilot basis, a skill development and skill upgradation program is underway at Shanti Nagar, Chandanagar for the unemployed youth belonging to economically weaker sections. This program is being conducted by the GHMC in collaboration with the Lighthouse Communities Foundation (LCF).

GHMC has also taken care of the homeless at 13 shelter homes in different parts of the city.

There are also seven shelter homes constructed on the premises of the Koti Maternity Hospital (King Koti), Mahavir Hospital (Masab Tank), ENT Hospital (King Koti), Niloufer Hospital (Red Hills), Osmania General Hospital, NIMS Hospital, and Area Hospital Nampally for the homeless.

Families and attendants of patients use these shelter homes at hospitals.
