Israel to Hire Indian Workers for Construction Amid Labor Shortage

New Delhi: In order to alleviate the acute labor shortage in its building industry, Israel has begun conversations to hire thousands of Indian laborers. According to a senior executive at the Israel Builders Association (IBA), a team of “selectors” from Israel visited India last week, with another senior delegation slated to fly for India next week to launch the recruitment process.

“On December 27, we will begin the process in Delhi and Chennai.” We are now planning to hire 10,000 people based on government clearances, with a potential increase to 30,000 in the near future depending on how things go. It is a long-term process,” said Shay Pauzner, Deputy Director General and Spokesperson for the Israel Builders Association.

Last week, Izchak Gurvitz, the head of the IBA’s division dealing with workers’ issues and the selection team, headed a group to India. Next week, they will meet with CEO Igal Slovik and other team members for additional conversations.
The decision comes at a time when Israel is experiencing a considerable labor shortage, particularly in the construction sector, needing immediate action to assure the continuation of key infrastructure projects. The ongoing battle has resulted in the revocation of a huge number of work permits, worsening the labor crisis.

During a recent phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the leaders discussed accelerating the arrival of migrant workers from India to Israel to meet the construction industry’s pressing demands.

“We desperately need more workers.” In any scenario, the administration will decide where the missing labor will come from,” Pauzner emphasized.
During his April visit to Israel, Israel’s Economy Minister Nir Barkat had already studied the potential of bringing in laborers from India. Discussions at the time centered on hiring roughly 160,000 workers for a variety of industries, including construction.

Due to a manpower shortage in Israel, the construction industry currently employs workers from particular professions. The scarcity has pushed the Israeli government to seek alternatives, and contractors have asked for hundreds of thousands of foreign workers.

Approximately 18,000 Indians already work in Israel, primarily in caregiving positions. The latest agreement agreed in May between Israel and India allows 42,000 Indian workers to work in Israel, notably in construction and nursing.
As the hiring process begins, the success of bringing in 10,000 Indian workers will be continuously watched, with the possibility of increasing to 30,000 in the coming months. The selecting process will begin next week and will continue approximately 10-15 days.

The Israeli construction industry’s request for more workers shows ongoing attempts to overcome labor shortages and guarantee the country’s key infrastructure projects continue to develop.
