Telangana govt to put all efforts to bring UNESCO World Heritage City tag for Hyderabad

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said here on Monday that the Telangana government will make all efforts needed to bring the UNESCO World Heritage City tag for Hyderabad

Rama Rao said six stepwells in the Qutb Shahi Tombs were restored in collaboration with the Aga Khan Foundation and the effort was recognized by UNESCO after inaugurating the 17th Century Bansilalpet Stepwell, which regained its original glory after decades due to a dedicated restoration project undertaken by the government.

Restoration of Moazzam Jahi Market, Murgi Chowk, Mir Alam Mandi, State Central Library, Shaikpet Sarai, and Khursheed Jah Devdi have been taken up under the leadership of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, he said.

“The city is not all about a few concrete structures, a few steel bridges, a few buildings or flyovers or underpasses. A city’s soul is all about its culture, heritage, it’s beautiful monuments. Unfortunately, we were not able to protect them since centuries,” the Minister said.

It was not an easy task to restore the Bansilalpet stepwell. “A total of 3,900 metric tons of waste was removed from this stepwell and shifted through 863 truck trips,” he said. A museum, a cafeteria, and an amphitheatre have been built to ensure that this historic stepwell is remembered by future generations.

The Minister stated that the GHMC sanitation workers, along with other stakeholders, had put in a lot of effort and that the onus of protecting the stepwell from now on lies with the locals of the area.

Members of the Gandipet Welfare Society (GWS) and The Rainwater Project, a social enterprise led by Kalpana Ramesh that also played an important role in the water body’s revival, thanked the Minister for his encouragement throughout the journey.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav, MA&UD Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar, Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi, and others.

Cultural programs were held at the aesthetically illuminated stepwell, and a small idol of Lord Ganesha, a Shivling, and other items discovered while removing debris and silt from the stepwell were also displayed.
