Telangana: State govt makes Aadhaar cards mandatory for Muslim marriages

The government of Telangana has decided to take tough action against Qazis who perform marriages of young Muslim girls. The Waqf Board has been directed to enter all marriage details online.

The government made this decision in response to complaints about young girls being married to Arab nationals. To prevent child marriages, the Aadhaar cards of bride and groom have been made mandatory for marriages and restrictions have been imposed on conducting marriages on the basis of any other identity card.

The Qazis have been instructed to use the Aadhaar card to determine whether the bride and groom are adults or not. Instruction has been provided to submit the details of marriages to the Waqf Board immediately after marriage, failing which legal action can be taken against Qazis and those involved.

Previously, the Qazis were appointed by the Department of Minority Welfare, but this has changed slightly. The application will be reviewed by the District Collector, who will make a recommendation to the department.

In addition, orders have been issued to keep the marriage certificate available online. As of now, all marriage arrangements are made in writing. To obtain a marriage certificate, one must go to the Haj House of Hyderabad, regardless of where the marriage takes place in the state.

According to Muhammad Masihullah Khan, Chairman of the Waqf Board, Telangana is the only state in the country where all details of Muslim marriages are registered online. In addition to previous marriages, all current marriages are registered with the Waqf Board. This is greatly assisting in the prevention of fraudulent practices.

Marriage certificates

Earlier this year, the Waqf Board developed a new application for the procurement of marriage and other documents, eliminating the role of brokers.

Shahnawaz Qasim IPS, the chief executive officer, has launched an application that allows recipients to fill out the forms and have their certificates sent to their homes in light of allegations of corruption in the Qudaat department and the expanding role of the intermediary.

Now, anyone from any part of Telangana can request a marriage certificate online. It will either be sent through the mail or delivered by a courier.

In addition to reducing the number of people queuing in the Qudaat area, the online application also aims to stop the broker from operating.

Certificates are also available from the Qudaat department, but an application must be filled out online first.
