The news was revealed by the WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus during a webinar on Covid 19. The Sinopharm vaccine is being produced by the Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd which is a subsidiary of China National Biotec Group.

The WHO said that the Sinopharm product is an inactivated vaccine called the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (Vero Cell). It has easy storage requirements which makes it highly suitable in settings where resources are not easily available. The vaccine is already in use in 42 countries in the world.

The European Medicine Agency (EMA), earlier this week started to roll out a review for the second Chinese Covid 19 vaccine called Sinovac. EMA said that the vaccine triggers the production of antibodies that target SARS-CoV-2 and helps in protection against the disease.

Before Sinopharm, WHO has given emergency use for vaccines by Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson and Johnson, Moderna and AstraZeneca.
