To meet public’s growing needs, residents demand more GHMC circles

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) circles are unable to meet the growing needs of its citizens due to the growing population and the increase in house numbers.

As of now, there are 30 circles divided into six zones, LB Nagar, Charminar, Khairatabad, Secunderabad, Serilingampally and Kukatpally. There is one municipal office in each circle that provides various services to citizens but cannot serve the public.

There was a demand from residents in these areas for the GHMC to establish more circle offices. There were initially seven circles, but 18 were added later. As the population grew and services slowed down, six more circles were added.

As a result, GHMC circles numbered 24 and then another six were added, making the total 30 circles. GHMC official data indicate that the city has over 25 lakh households and a population of over 10 million, making it the sixth most populous urban agglomeration in the country.

However, the existing 30 circles are insufficient to serve such a large number of people. Circle offices are often miles away, making it difficult for people to travel for services.

Mohammed Minhaj, a social activist and expert in urban development, told The Hans India, “The city population needs services, and all their grievances related to civic amenities must be addressed, so GHMC must increase in circles to provide fast services.”

Documents such as house construction permits, trade licenses, voter ID, local issues, and birth certificates can take hours to obtain. According to GHMC officials, the municipal offices are located in various locations within the city, but the Khairatabad zonal office is responsible for Jubilee Hills, Karwan, and Nampally.

Despite this, people living in these places face a lot of difficulties in resolving their issues and are forced to wait at the zonal office for several houses to be resolved.

Similarly, the LB Nagar zonal office is in Saroor Nagar, and there is another office in Hayat Nagar that covers the eastern areas. However, citizens are not receiving adequate services.

The same issue has been reported in the Charminar, Secunderabad, and Kukatpally zones. People from various areas demanded that the GHMC increase the number of circles and establish circle offices in nearby areas.
